windmill 2

Stone Cross Tower Windmill is generally considered to be one of the finest late generation Grade II* listed Windmills to be built in England. It is one of only three tower mills in East and West Sussex retaining all of its original machinery and attracts enthusiasts from all over the Country and abroad. The Windmill is managed and maintained by Stone Cross Mill Trust (registered charity number 1052827)

windmill 3

This windmill is unique in the position that it occupies on the high
ground to the north of Eastbourne and visible from many places in the town. So much that it was marked in the Admiralty charts as a reference point for shipping.

Stone Cross Windmill produces modest amounts of wholemeal stone ground flour from locally grown wheat, which is sold to the public and small businesses. All the flour on sale today has been milled in Stone Cross Windmill.

The Mill is open to the public from Easter (or April) to the end of September and guided tours are available to visitors by volunteer guides. Entry is free and the Mill relies solely on flour sales, donations and membership. The principle aim is to preserve the Windmill as part of our heritage as well as to increase awareness of the Mill as a tourist and educational attraction. The Heritage Centre in the Roundel provides a venue for local groups and exhibition facilities for local arts and crafts.

The Mill Store Café, adjacent to the Windmill, offers light refreshments whenever the Mill is open to the public and also houses the disabled toilet. The Mill Store sells flour, souvenirs and provides a meeting place for local people to sit and enjoy refreshments. Groups are welcomed by appointment and Cream Teas can be arranged with cakes and scones made with the flour produced in the mill. Parking is available for disabled visitors on the Mill site. Both the Roundel (the lower floor of the Mill) and the Mill Store Café are also accessible to disabled visitors.
