AMBULANCE COMMUNITY FIRST RESPONDERS (CFRs)

Community First Responders are volunteers who are trained by South East Coast Ambulance Service Foundation Trust to respond in their own vehicles to 999 calls, such as suspected heart attacks, cardiac arrest, breathing difficulties and many other types of emergency.  Responders do not replace an emergency attendance by the Ambulance Service but by virtue of their numbers and location aim to be on scene very, very quickly to provide an immediate first response.  Responders, typically wear red & black uniforms and carry emergency life-saving equipment such as defibrillators and oxygen.  They are trained to deliver certain drugs such as Salbutamol for patients with Asthma and severe breathing difficulties.

The Eastbourne Responder Group attends over a thousand 999 calls per year, mainly within Eastbourne.  New volunteers are now sought in locations such as Pevensey, Pevensey Bay, Westham, Polegate, Hailsham, Herstmonceux and surrounding areas, to provide this important emergency cover.

Whilst the Ambulance Service provides training, all equipment and on-going scheme costs are met by charitable donations and active fundraising.

Support volunteers are also being recruited to assist with the essential jobs of fundraising and PR.  The active responders are on call so it can be difficult to raise funds as they are always leaving events to attend emergencies.  The team are looking for people who will help the group raise awareness and the funds required to keep up this vital service to the local community.
